There are two ways to set up two-step verification in Dropbox: SMS and an authenticator app. We will learn about both methods in this article. Lastly, you’ll be able to enable two-step verification in Dropbox using SMS or an authenticator app.

How to Enable Two-Step Verification in Dropbox via SMS

Here’s how to turn on two-step verification in Dropbox using SMS.

1. Sign in to your Dropbox account on your desktop or mobile browser, click your profile, then click Settings.
2. On your Personal Account page, click the Security tab.
3. Now go to the Two-Step Verification section and click on the toggle button to enable Two-Step Verification.
4. Review the information in the dialog box and click the Start button when you are finished. You can click Learn more to learn more about how two-step verification works in Dropbox.
5. For your own safety, Dropbox will ask you to enter your account password to continue setting up two-step verification. Enter your password and click Next.
6. When asked how you would like to receive your security codes, select Use text messages and click Next.
7. On the next page, select your country code from the drop-down list, enter your cell phone number, and click Next. Every time you sign in or add a new device, Dropbox will send a security code to this number.
8. To verify your phone number, Dropbox will immediately send a 6-digit security code to the phone number you saved above. Enter the code in the space provided and click Next to continue.
9. If you lose access to your primary phone number you will be prompted to register an emergency phone number. Although this step is optional, we strongly recommend it. Enter an emergency phone number in the space provided and click Next.
10. Dropbox will provide you with ten 8-character security codes. These codes will also be sent to your phone. If you lose access to your phone, you can use them to log in to your account. Copy them and keep them in a safe place, then click Next.
11. Review the information in the dialog box on the next page and click Next when finished.
12. You will be redirected to your personal account page. Your two-step verification status is now activated. From this page, you can also run a security check, change your primary and backup phone numbers, add a security key, and unroot all linked devices.

Now every time you sign in to your Dropbox account or add a new device, you’ll need to enter a security code from your phone.

How to Enable Two-Step Verification in Dropbox Through the Authenticator App

Here’s how to enable two-step verification in Dropbox using an authenticator app.

1. Sign in to your Dropbox account on your desktop or mobile browser, click your profile, then click Settings.
2. Click the Security tab on your Personal Account page.
3. Now go to the Two-Step Verification section and turn on the Two-Step Verification toggle button.

5. For your own safety, Dropbox will ask you to enter your account password to continue setting up two-step verification. Enter your password and click Next.
6. When asked how you would like to receive your security codes, select Use mobile app and click Next.
7. You will need an authenticator app to scan the QR code on your screen. Dropbox supports Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile, and Microsoft Authenticator, among others.
8. Open your Authenticator app on your mobile phone and press the plus button.
9. Tap Scan QR Code and point your phone’s camera at the QR code on your desktop screen.
10. After scanning the QR code, click on Next on your desktop. You can also tap the Enter setup key on the app and manually click on Enter your secret key on your desktop.
11. Enter the 6-digit code generated by your Authenticator application in the space provided on your desktop and click Next.
12. Enter an emergency phone number and click Next. This is also optional but highly recommended in case you lose access to your phone.
13. Copy your recovery codes and put them in a safe place in case you lose access to your Authenticator app, then click Next.
14. Review the information in the dialog box on the next page, and then click Next to complete the configuration. You will receive email notifications informing you that you have successfully applied for two-step verification.
